The Hixson Fellowship was established by the International Foundation in 1983 in honor of George F. Hixson (left), the first President of Kiwanis International, and to build the endowment fund of our International Foundation. The Worldwide Service Project was adopted by Kiwanis with the goal of virtually eliminating iodine deficiency disorders, the world's leading cause of preventable mental retardation in children. Each contribution of $1,000 touches the lives of some 20,000 children. Kiwanis International, known for serving the world's children, has made a commitment to the children of the world to virtually eliminate this deficiency from the face of the earth.
